Pre-Flight Fasting for Jet Lag: The Theory Behind the Argonne Method

How the US military's Argonne diet uses meal timing to shift your body clock before you even board the plane.

Light gets most of the attention in jet lag science, but it isn't the only signal your body clock listens to. Meal timing is a secondary but genuine zeitgeber — and a structured feed-fast cycle in the days before you fly is the basis of one of the oldest documented jet lag protocols: the Argonne diet, developed at Argonne National Laboratory for U.S. military personnel in the 1980s.

The core mechanism

Peripheral circadian clocks — in the liver, pancreas, and gut — respond strongly to when you eat, somewhat independently of the light-driven master clock in your brain. Alternating between feasting and fasting days is thought to make these peripheral clocks more responsive to a deliberate reset.

How the protocol works

The classic Argonne method runs over four days before departure:

  • Day 1 (feast): normal, hearty breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with more protein at breakfast and lunch, more carbohydrate at dinner.
  • Day 2 (fast): eat light — small, low-calorie foods, minimal caffeine.
  • Day 3 (feast): repeat the feast pattern from Day 1.
  • Day 4 (fast, travel day): eat light again, timed to the destination.
  • On arrival: break the fast with a full breakfast at the destination's local breakfast time.

What the evidence actually supports

The Argonne method has anecdotal support from decades of military use and a plausible mechanism grounded in real circadian biology, but it has fewer large, modern randomized controlled trials behind it than light-exposure or melatonin protocols.

A more practical takeaway

Even without the full four-day protocol, the principle is worth borrowing: eat your first substantial meal at the destination's local morning time, not whenever your body happens to feel hungry. This single habit leverages the same peripheral-clock mechanism with far less planning required.
